How to Remove Oatmeal Stains from a Bathrobe.

Oatmeal is the breakfast of champions, working stiffs, and school kids across the country. Add some milk to that and you have an incredible meal that’s hardy and sustainable through the day. Unfortunately that hardy meal can be hard to remove if allowed to dry and age for a long period of time. Attack it soon rather than latter for the best results.

How to test for colorfastness: Take the stain removal product and apply small amount to a white towel. Take that part of the towel and blot a hidden area of the garment to see if color transfers over to the white towel.

First step: Using a spoon scrape off any excess oatmeal without imbedding it deeper into the fibers.

Next: Vaska Laundry Detergent and BioKleen Bac-Out an enzyme stain remover.

• Create a spotting solution with 1part Vaska Laundry Detergent, 3 parts enzyme stain remover, and 3 parts water.
• Apply the spotting solution directly to the Oatmeal stain.
• Tamp (tap) with a brush.
• Wait a few minutes.
• Blot with a dry white towel, and then blot with a wet white towel, followed again by a dry white towel.
• Repeat again if necessary.

• Apply the Bac-Out directly to the Oatmeal stain.

• Tamp (tap) with a clean brush.
• Wait a 1-2 hour. Do not let the Bac-Out dry. Reapply if necessary.
• Blot with a dry white towel, and then blot with a wet white towel, followed again by a dry white towel.
• Enzyme’s need time to work, repeat again if necessary.

Finishing Up:

Once the stain starts to dissipate dry clean (wet clean) or wash the garment per manufactures care label. It is not advised to leave spotting agents on a garment for long periods of time as it will age and discolor or yellow.

Motor oil is oil, a little heavier than most oils but nonetheless, the last time I looked it was still oil. We have used these techniques with much success daily in our certified green dry cleaners and now you can use them with success at home.

Test for colorfastness before proceeding: Take the stain removal product and apply small amount to a white towel. Take that part of the towel and blot a hidden area of the garment to see if color transfers over to the white towel. If the item is not colorfast start with step 1, use caution as this will still remove color. If the item is colorfast, than skip directly to step 2.

Step 1: Dawn Dishwashing Liquid

• · Apply the dawn Dishwashing Liquid directly to the motor oil stain.
• · Tamp the stained area with a toothbrush to help the Dawn penetrate the oil stain.
• · Let Dawn penetrate for a few minutes.
• · Rinse with fresh water.

If the first steps did not achieve adequate results then continue with a citrus base oil degreaser.

Step 2: Dawn Dishwashing Liquid and CITRASOLV Degreaser

• · Create a spotting solution with 1 part Dawn Dishwashing Liquid, 2 parts CITRASOLV degreaser, and 2 parts water.
• · Apply the spotting solution directly to the motor oil stain.
• · Tamp the stain lightly with a soft brush (toothbrush) to help the solution penetrate into the oil stain.
• · Let the solution penetrate for a few minutes.
• · Rinse with fresh water.

Oil stain may be stubborn, repeat these steps again if necessary.

FINISHING UP!

When done removing the stain always finish by cleaning the entire item per manufacture care instructions. Even benign spotting agents such as these will oxidize and yellow over time.

Stubborn Caffe? Mocha Stain

Enzyme Stain Remover: Earth Friendly Products – Everyday Stain & Odor Remover

• Apply the enzyme stain remover directly to the mocha stain.
• Tamp with a clean brush.
• Let enzyme stain remover penetrate the mocha stain for 30-45 minutes.
• Rinse area with fresh water.

Oxidized Caffe? Mocha Stain

Non Chlorinated Bleach-Sodium Percarbonate and Sodium Carbonate: OxiClean

• Create a soaking solution in a bucket with 2 ounces of oxiclean per 1 gallon of water.
• Soak the entire item in the oxiclean solution.
• Let item soak for 2-3 hours.
• Rinse with fresh water.

Finish by cleaning the entire item as recommended by the care label.

Use product to test for colorfastness before attempting any stain removal techniques.

It is next to impossible to eat pasta with a marinara sauce and not get some on yourself. No matter how hard I try. When I’m done with my plate and I look down and there it is a few specks on my shirt or pants, some on the placemat not to mention what the napkin look like. Tomato base stains are among some of the more difficult stains to remove. So be patient as it may take several attempts before achieving success. And treat the stains soon that later as it will set over time.

Test the color of the garment in a hidden area with the spotting solution of choice to see if it’s colorfast.

Heinz Distilled White Vinegar and Dawn Dishwashing Liquid:

1. 1.    Create a spotting solution with 1 part dishwashing liquid, 3 parts distilled white vinegar, and 3 parts water.

1. 2.    For a small area apply the solution directly to the marinara sauce stain. For a large area soak the entire stained garment in the solution.

1. 3.    Let the solution penetrate for 15-20 minutes.

1. 4.    Launder as normal.

If we are not achieving the results desired, then switch to a stronger product.

BioKleen Bac-Out Enzyme Stain Remover:

1. 1.    Apply enzyme stain remover directly to the marinara sauce stain.

1. 2.    Let it penetrate for 1-2 hours, re apply if it starts to dry out.

1. 3.    Launder as normal.

Soaking the entire garment in the enzyme is a good idea for large stains or to prevent color loss from a specific area. Soak for several hours or overnight.

What can I say about margarine that’s hasn’t already been said, a less saturated fat version of butter with all the same flavor characteristics. Just thinking of it stirs up emotions…margarine spread on an English muffins in the morning, or drizzled on popcorn, YUM!…then reality…oil stains…!@#$%^&*…Now what? Vermont maple syrup is classic Americana, next to baseball, hot dog, and apple pie. Unless you’re like me and use Mrs. Butterworth, Aunt Jemima or Log Cabin maple syrup, which is mostly high fructose corn syrup. Then it’s only simulated Americana. Nonetheless, the stain is the same and once the sugar is removed the other ingredients with float out along with it.

Seventh Generation Laundry Detergent:

1. 1.    Create a pre spotting solution with 1 part Seventh Generation Laundry Detergent and 10 parts water.
2. 2.    Apply a small amount of the solution directly onto the maple syrup stain.
3. 3.    Tamp with a brush to help the solution penetrate the stain.
4. 4.    Let it penetrate for a few minutes.
5. 5.    Blot with a wet towel followed by a dry towel.

Simple, Done?

I always suggest it is best to dry clean or launder garments when finished with the spotting process. Leaving residual spotting solutions on the garment will oxidize over time and cause yellowing.

General Info: Regardless of the hot chocolate manufacture whether it’s Nesquik, Hershey or Swiss Miss, most hot chocolates contain chocolate, sugar, and some form of milk. The heat from the hot chocolate will cause it to penetrate deep into the weave of the material so attending to the stain sooner is better than later.

How to test for colorfastness: Take the stain removal product and apply small amount to a white towel. Take that part of the towel and blot a hidden area of the garment to see if color transfers over to the white towel.

First step: You can easily blot off a fresh hot chocolate stain with a dry towel as soon as it happens. Follow that by blotting it with a wet towel, and then again with a dry towel.

Like many stain once you let it dry it becomes more difficult to remove.

Need Help: Once the hot chocolate stain has dried you will need to resort to products to remove it.

Highlighter ink is a different composition that all other inks, many of them are water based. What a relief, that HUGE highlighter ink stain is not permanent. As a matter of fact, it’s fairly easy to remove it.

Dawn Dishwashing Liquid:

1. 1.    Create a pre spotting solution with 1 part Dawn Dishwashing Liquid and 3 parts water.
2. 2.    Fold a paper towel into a small square pad and place it under the Highlighter Ink stain.
3. 3.    Apply the solution directly to the Highlighter Ink stain.
4. 4.    Tamp the stained area with a toothbrush to help the solution penetrate into the stain.
5. 5.     Wait few minutes.
6. 6.    With another paper towel folded into a small square, blot the stained area.
7. 7.    Repeat steps 2 to 6 until the Highlighter Ink no longer transfer to the paper towel.
8. 8.    Rinse area with fresh water.

FINISHING UP!

Dishwashing liquid is a great product to start with because everyone has some in their home. My favorite is Dawn.

Dawn Dishwashing Liquid:

• Create a spotting solution with 1 part Dawn Dishwashing Liquid and 3 parts water.
• Apply the Dawn solution directly to the Hand Lotion stain.
• Tamp (tap) with a brush to help the solution penetrate stain.
• Let Dawn solution penetrate for a few minutes.
• Rinse area with fresh water.
• Repeat if necessary.

Oil stains are difficult to remove at home, if a stronger product is needed use a citrus based degreaser.

Grape can be a difficult tannin stain and needs to be addressed immediately. Following are some green products and techniques that I use as a professional that you can use at home.

A Spotting Agent;

Heinz Distilled White Vinegar

1. 1.    Apply a small amount of distilled white vinegar directly onto the grape stain.
2. 2.    Let the vinegar penetrate the grape stain for a few minutes.
3. 3.    Blot off with a wet towel followed by a dry towel.
4. 4.    Repeat again if necessary.

A Spotting Solution;

Dawn Dishwashing Liquid and Heinz Distilled White Vinegar

1. 1.    Create a spotting solution with 1 part Dawn Dishwashing Liquid, 3 parts Heinz Distilled White Vinegar, and 3 parts water.
2. 2.    Apply the solution directly to the grape stain.
3. 3.    Let the solution penetrate the grape stain for a few minutes
4. 4.    Blot the stained area with a wet towel followed by a dry towel.
5. 5.    Repeat again if necessary.

Enzyme Stain Remover;

Earth Friendly Products – Everyday Stain & Odor Remover

1. 1.    Apply the enzyme stain remover directly to the grape stain.
2. 2.    Let enzyme stain remover penetrate the grape stain for several hours. Reapply if the stained area starts to dry.
3. 3.    Rinse with fresh water.

Enzyme Stain Removers take time to work. Repeat again if necessary.

Sodium Borate;

Borax

1. 1.    Create a soaking solution in a small bucket with 2 ounces of Borax per 1 gallon of water.
2. 2.    Soak the entire garment in the Borax solution.
3. 3.    Let the garment soak for several hours or overnight.
4. 4.    Rinse with fresh water.

Are We Done Yet?

What ever technique use, whether blotting the stain or soaking the garment, always clean the entire garment as recommended by the care label. Never leave garments unclean after using spotting or cleaning products. Over time the spotting agent can discolor, or yellow, and weaken the material.

• Soak fishy smelling item in a bucket with an enzyme stain remover.
• Let product soak 4-5 hours, or overnight.
• Launder as normal.

• Dilute 1 part laundry detergent with 3 part water to create a spotting solution.
• Apply the solution directly to the fish stain.
• Tamp (Tap) with a brush.
• Let solution rest on stain for 5-10 minute to penetrate.
• Rinse area thoroughly with fresh water.

• Apply the product directly to the fishy smelling area.
• Tamp (Tap) with a clean brush.
• Let product rest on stain for 1-2 hours to penetrate, reapply the stained area if it starts to dry.
• Rinse area thoroughly with fresh water.
• Repeat if necessary.

• Wash a down feathered items only in a front load washing machine, or hand wash. Top load machines are too aggressive.
• Use the gentle cycle. Over agitation may tear the cover causing damage to the washer by clogging the pump with feathers.
• Rinse the item before you start the actual wash cycle. This will remove the air from the item and will allow the down item to tumble. Otherwise the down feathered pockets item fills with air, which will in turn stress the cover and the item will only slosh around inside the wash wheel.
• Wash the down feathered item with a few slightly heavier garments such as jeans to help create scrubbing action. Assuming the heavier items will fit into the machine.
• Dry in a dryer on low heat with a small load.
• Add 8-10 tennis balls into the dryer during the dry cycle, this will help separate the down feathers and allow it to dry faster.
• Check for clumping of feathers. If you find that the feathers are stuck together then they are still wet. Fluff the clumped areas to separate the down feathers before re starting the dryer.
• Be patient it may take an hour or more to completely dry a down fill item.
• Use regular laundry detergent, pre spot all stains before washing.
• Check stained areas before putting the down item into the dryer. Prolong exposure to heat will permanently set a stain.

How to Remove Dog Urine Stains from a Blanket.

NO!!!…  BAD DOG!!!…  NO!!!…  BAD DOG!!!

A dog urine stain is composed of many different matters: salts, minerals, and pigment. Dog urine is a water soluble stain that will wash out if the stain is still wet. A dried and set dog urine stains will need a lot of extra help in the form of an enzyme.

Either apply the enzyme directly or create an enzyme solution to soak the entire garment, the technique you choose to use will depend on the amount of urine and color of the garment. If there is a little urine stain than apply the enzyme directly to the stain, but if there is a lot of urine or the color bleeds, then soaking the garment is a better choice.

A good enzyme remover will remove all of the visual stain and smell unless it has oxidized, in which case the enzyme will remove the smell but not all the visual stain.

In some cases the yellow oxidized stain can be removed with an oxygenated non chlorine bleach.

Dog Urine Stain:

Enzyme Stain Remove: BioKleen’s Bac-Out or Earth Friendly Product’s Everyday Stain and Odor Remover.

• Apply the enzyme stain remover directly to the urine stain or soak entire garment.
• Let enzyme stain remover rest on garment or soak entire garment for several hours. Keep stained area covered with enzyme, do not let area dry out.
• Blot stained area with a wet towel followed by a dry towel or launder as normal.

Oxidized Yellowed Dog Urine Stain:

Oxygenated Non Chlorine Bleach – Sodium Carbonate & Sodium Percarbonate: Earth Friendly Product’s OXO Bright or Oxiclean.

• Per instructions create a soaking solution.
• Soak entire garment for several hours.
• Launder as normal.

Rubbing and scrubbing can cause excess color lost.

The following is some basic information you need to understand before you begin. There are some inherent risk with washing your curtains and it is important to understand that washing your curtains may cause irreversible damage.

Basic Information:

• · Curtains often are damaged by sun light. Either directly or indirectly. Often this damage is undetectable on white curtains.
• · Signs of sun damage are: color fading, yellowing, fibers feeling dry, weak-brittle to the touch. Gently pull on the curtain in an hidden area to test the strength of the material.
• · Up to 3% shrinkage is acceptable within the industry as standard shrinkage when washing textiles. On a curtain of 100 inches that’s 3 inches of shrinkage.
• · Cotton Linen will be extremely wrinkled when washed, especially if washed and extracted in a washing machine.
• · Best to use the washer as a tub and turn the machine on and off manually to control the amount of agitation and extraction.
• · Excess agitation and high speed extraction will cause shrinkage and wrinkles. Minimal agitation and extraction may not removal residuals (soap, dirt, water).
• · Best to iron the curtain while it is 80-90% dry (little damp) after washing. Spraying water on the curtain after it has dried does not work as well because the water is not as even as after washing.
• · Must iron slowly. This will take quite a bit of time for each curtain.
• · Be aware that this will be a time and effort consuming process.

Products need for project:

• · Small bucket
• · Several large bath towels
• · Laundry detergent
• · Non chlorine bleach (OxiClean, OxoBright, Borax)
• · Aluminum foil
• · Optional: Can spray starch with ironing aid
• · Washing machine or bathtub
• · Shower rod or place to hang dry
• · Water
• · Patience

Preparation:

• · Cover the rings with aluminum foil.
• · Use a large piece of aluminum foil (approx 24″ long).
• · Softly crinkle the aluminum foil into a loose ball.
• · Open the balled aluminum foil back into a sheet.
• · Fold the aluminum foil into a square approximately three times the size of the ring.
• · Loosely wrap the aluminum foil around the ring. Tight enough so it will not fall off but loose enough to allow the crinkles to cushion the rings from damage in the washer.

Creating Solution:

To remove the aged yellow stains, we will soak the curtain in a non chlorine bleach (OxiClean, OxoBright, Borax) solution for several hours (3-4) to eliminate the stain. On color a curtain check for colorfastness before soaking. Soaking curtains in a non chlorine bleach solution for an extended period (24 + hours) may cause color damage and weaken the material. Due to the size it is best to clean the curtains one at a time.

• · Create a soaking solution for the washing machine.
• · Using a bucket fill approximately 1/2 of the bucket with hot water.
• · Add approximately 1 oz of non chlorine bleach and 1 oz of laundry detergent to 3 gallons of water needed to soak the curtain in the washing machine. Top load home machines will use approximately 15 gallons of water, front load home machines will use approximately 5 gallons of water.
• · Mix the content in the bucket to dissolve ingredients.
• · On color drapes, test for colorfastness.
• · Using the solution you created, apply a small amount on to a white towel. Use that part of the towel to blot a hidden area of the curtain. Any color transfer onto the towel will indicate the amount of color lost or transfer during washing.
• · Don’t mistaken dirt transfer as color lost. Most curtains are extremely dusty and dirty. When blotting with a white towel the dust and dirt will transfer over as a brownish yellow color.

Soaking:

• · Place a curtain into the washer.
• · Set the washing machine on the most delicate cycle on the machine (delicate, hand wash, or turn on/off manually).
• · Start washer and begin to fill with cold water.
• · Add the pre made soaking solution from step 2 into the washer.
• · After the machine has filled with water, allow it to mix for 1 minute.
• · Stop or turn off the machine without draining the solution.
• · Allow the curtain to soak for 3-4 hours.
• · Check stained area before continuing.
• · If the stain has not completely dissipated, continue to soak the curtain. The amount of time will depend on the amount the stain has dissipated and the amount of time you have already soaked the curtain.

Cleaning and Rinse:

• · Start the washing machine and let it run for 2 minutes to work the dust and dirt out of the fibers.
• · Drain the soaking solution.
• · Extract for 15 seconds on as slow of a speed as possible to rid the soaking solution. High extraction for a long period of time will cause excess wrinkles.
• · Fill the washer with clean fresh rinse water.
• · Let the machine agitate for 2 minutes on as delicate of a cycle as possible.
• · Drain the rinse water.
• · Extract for 15 seconds.
• · Fill the washing machine again to rinse a second time.
• · Repeat the entire rinse process again for a total of 3 rinses.

Drying:

• · Lay the towels flat on the floor in the shape of the curtain.
• · Lay the curtain on the towels. If the curtain is larger than the towels, fold the curtain in half or quarters. Keep in mind the more you fold the curtain the more fold lines you will create.
• · Roll the curtain up in the towels as smooth and tight as possible.
• · Squeeze as much water as you can out of the drape.
• · Unroll the towel.
• · Hang the curtain up by the rings on the curtain rod or hang over a clean shower rod in the bathroom.
• · Try to prevent any water from running down the curtain. This often will cause streak marks.
• · Remove the aluminum foil from the rings.
• · Dry the area around the rings with a towel or hair dryer to keep the rings from creating rust marks.

Ironing:

• · Optional: While wet, evenly spray the curtain with a spray starch with an ironing aid to help with ironing ease. Depending on the amount of spray starch used, this may cause the curtain to become slightly stiff and/or unevenly stiff.
• · Check the curtain periodically for moisture content.
• · With approximately 10-20% of moisture remaining in the curtain is the perfect time to iron them. DO NOT allow the curtain to dry completely. It is much more difficult to remove the wrinkle after they have dried.
• · If the curtain starts to feel stiff as it dries, put the curtain in the dryer and tumble it for 10-15 minutes without any heat (cold air only).
• · Take the curtain down and slowly iron the curtain dry. Use an iron with a hot setting (cotton or linen).

Finish:

• · Re hang the curtain.
• · Your Finished! Congratulation, now repeat all steps with the remaining curtains.

How to Remove Cranberry Stains from a Bathrobe.

Whether the cranberries are from the farmers market, the organic grocery store, or the cheapest cranberries you can find on sale, it doesn’t matter, they all stain the same.

A cranberry stain is acidic and a tannin stain. Many of the spotting products such as Spray n Wash and Shout are high alkaline products. These products will change the structure to of the cranberry stain and make the stain much more difficult to remove. Stay away from these products for a tannin stain.

Choice of Products: Laundry Detergent, Distilled White Vinegar, Hydrogen Peroxide, and Borax.

Fresh Cranberry Stain:

• Blot with a wet towel followed by a dry towel.
• Repeat several times to remove the entire cranberry stain.
• If necessary create a spotting solution with 1 part laundry detergent, 1 part distilled white vinegar and 10 parts water.
• Apply solution directly on to the cranberry stain.
• Tamp (tap) with a brush.
• Blot with a wet towel followed by a dry towel.

Dried Cranberry Stain:

• Create a spotting solution with 1 part laundry detergent, 5 part distilled white vinegar and 5 parts water.

• Apply directly to the dried cranberry stain.
• Tamp with a brush.
• Let the solution penetrate for 10-15 minutes.
• Blot with a wet towel followed by a dry towel.

Stubborn Dried Cranberry Stain:

• Apply Hydrogen Peroxide directly to the stubborn dried cranberry stain.
• Tamp with a brush.
• Let the solution penetrate for 15-20 minutes.
• Blot with a wet towel followed by a dry towel.
• Repeat several times necessary.

*Hydrogen Peroxide is a natural bleaching agent that will remove color. Test in a hidden area before use.

Aged and Oxidized Cranberry Stains:

• Create a soaking solution with Borax and water per instructions.

• Soak the garment in the borax solution for several hours or over night.
• Rinse with clean water.

Test for colorfastness before using any of the spotting solutions. Apply a small amount of the solution on a white towel, blot that part of the towel on a hidden part o the garment. Check for color transfer on to the towel.

When done with the stain removal process, always clean the entire garment as recommended by the care label. Never leave garments unclean after using spotting or cleaning products. Over time the spotting agent can discolor, or yellow, and weaken the material.

Corn oil stains at times are difficult to remove at home unless you know the secret. Let me introduce you to some green oil stain removers that we use in our green dry cleaner and are readily available at the local grocery stores.

Dawn Dishwashing Liquid:

• · Apply the Dawn Dishwashing Liquid directly to the corn oil stain.
• · Tamp the stained area with a toothbrush to help the Dawn penetrate the oil stain.
• · Let Dawn penetrate for a few minutes.
• · Rinse with fresh water.

If the first steps did not achieve adequate results then continue with a citrus base oil degreaser.

CitraSolv Degreaser:

• · Create a spotting solution with 1 part Dawn Dishwashing Liquid, 2 part CirtaSolv degreaser, and 2 parts water.
• · Apply the spotting solution directly to the corn oil stain.
• · Tamp the stain lightly with a soft brush (toothbrush) to help the solution penetrate into the oil stain.
• · Let the solution penetrate for a few minutes.
• · Rinse with fresh water.

Oil stain may be stubborn, repeat these steps again if necessary.

FINISHING UP!

When done removing the stain always finish by cleaning the entire item per manufacture care instructions. Even benign spotting agents such as these will oxidize and yellow over time.

How to Remove Chili Stains from a Blouse.

FIRE!!!…ON FIRE! That’s my mouth at a chili cook off at the county fair. Every chili I try seems to be hot than the one before and when I’m done my shirt has sampled more than I.

Chili is a complex stain. There are as many different ingredients in chili as there are people in this world. Just look on Hormel’s website, Stagg’s website, or google chili ingredients to see a huge variety of recipes. So let’s break it down to the basics: water, protein of some sort (meat, beans), tomato, onion and spices.

It is always best to remove the stain as soon as it happens. While the stain is wet it is much easier to remove. The longer you wait the more difficult it will become and eventually the stain will set to become impossible to remove.

We are going to use a three step process to remove the chili stain. First step will remove the stain from the surface.
Step two will eliminate residual protein matter in the fibers. The third step will lift the natural dye from the spices that are embedded in the fibers.

First: Create a spotting solution with Seventh Generation Laundry Detergent, Heinz Distilled White Vinegar, and Water.

• · Create a spotting solution of 1 part Seventh Generation Laundry Detergent, 5 parts Heinz Distilled White Vinegar, and 5 parts water.
• · Apply this solution directly to the chili stain.
• · Tamp with a brush.
• · Let the solution penetrate the chili stain for a few minutes.
• · Apply clean water to a white towel and blot stained area followed by a dry towel.

Second: Apply an Enzyme Stain Remover such as BioKleen’s Bac-Out or Earth Friendly Product’s Everyday Stain & Odor Remover.

• · Apply the Enzyme Stain Remover directly to the chili stain. Or for a large stained area soak the entire garment in the Enzyme Stain Remover
• · Let the enzyme stain remove rest or soak for several hours or overnight.
• · Blot area with a wet white towel followed by a dry white towel or rinse with clean water.
• · Repeat these steps again if ne cessary.

Third: Create a soaking solution made with a non chlorine bleach – Sodium Carbonate and Sodium Percarbonate (OxoBright or OxiyClean).

• · Following the directions on the container, mix a soaking solution in a bucket to soak the entire garment.
• · Soak the garment for several hours.
• · Check for any reminisces of the stain.

FINISHING UP!

When done removing the stain always finish by cleaning the entire item per manufacture care instructions. Even benign spotting agents such as these will oxidize and yellow over time.

Cat Urine…Wow!  What a difficult problem. Cats are intelligent creatures. We regularly see cat’s urine on their owner’s prized possessions, i.e. comforter, blanket, and pillows when they are upset with the owner. Often this is when the owner leaves the cat locked in the house for a long weekend. When the owner returns home the cat will urinate on the bedding to show their dissatisfaction.

A cat urine stain is composed of many different matters: salts, minerals, and pigment. Cat urine is a water soluble stain that will wash out if the stain is still wet. A dried and set cat urine stains will need a lot of extra help in the form of an enzyme.

Either apply the enzyme directly or create an enzyme solution to soak the entire garment, the technique you choose to use will depend on the amount of urine and color of the garment. If there is a little urine stain than apply the enzyme directly to the stain, but if there is a lot of urine or the color bleeds, then soaking the garment is a better choice.

A good enzyme remover will remove all of the visual stain and smell unless it has oxidized, in which case the enzyme will remove the smell but not all the visual stain.

In some cases the yellow oxidized stain can be removed with an oxygenated non chlorine bleach.

Urine Stain:

Enzyme Stain Remove: BioKleen’s Bac-Out or Earth Friendly Product’s Everyday Stain and Odor Remover.

• Apply the enzyme stain remover directly to the urine stain or soak entire garment.
• Let enzyme stain remover rest on garment or soak entire garment for several hours. Keep stained area covered with enzyme, do not let area dry out.
• Blot stained area with a wet towel followed by a dry towel or launder as normal.

Oxidized Yellowed Urine Stain:

Oxygenated Non Chlorine Bleach – Sodium Carbonate & Sodium Percarbonate: Earth Friendly Product’s OXO Bright or Oxiclean.

• Per instructions create a soaking solution.
• Soak entire garment for several hours.
• Launder as normal.

Having your kitty on your lap and gently petting them is a comforting feeling. But looking down and seeing a skid mark (feces stain) is not a pleasant sight. Cat feces is water soluble thus a good laundry detergent will easily break it down and lift it out.

Vaska Laundry Detergent:

1. 1.    Create a pre spotting solution with 1 part Vaska Laundry Detergent and 10 parts water.
2. 2.    Apply a small amount of solution directly onto the cat feces stain.
3. 3.    Tamp with a brush to help the solution penetrate the stain.
4. 4.    Let it rest for a few minutes.
5. 5.    Blot with a wet towel followed by a dry towel.

Any residual smell can be removed using an enzyme stain remover. Enzyme stain removers can be found in the laundry department of most grocery stores or in pet stores.

BioKleen’s Bac-Out or Earth Friendly Product’s Every Day Stain & Odor Remover

1. 1.    Apply a small amount of the enzyme stain remover onto the cat feces stained area.
2. 2.    Let it rest for 1-2 hours, re-apply if it starts to dry out.
3. 3.    Blot with a wet towel followed by a dry towel.

Done? I always suggest it is best to dry clean or launder garments when done with the spotting process. Leaving residual spotting solutions on the garment will oxidize over time and cause yellowing.

Cappuccino’s can be made at home on a Miele coffee maker with Coffea Arabica beans ranging from Kona Hawaii to Yemen in the Arabian Peninsula. They can come from your favorite coffee house such as Peet’s and Starbucks or the local café down the street from your house. Fresh Cappuccino Stain

Spotting Solution:

Seventh Generation Laundry Detergent, Heinz Distilled White Vinegar.

• Create a spotting solution with 1 part Seventh Generation laundry detergent, 3 parts Heinz distilled white vinegar, and 5 parts water.

• Apply the solution directly to the cappuccino stain.
• Tamp stained area with a brush.
• Let the solution penetrate the stain for 5-10 minutes.
• Rinse area with fresh water.

Stubborn Cappuccino Stain

Enzyme Stain Remover:

Earth Friendly Products – Everyday Stain & Odor Remover

• Apply the enzyme stain remover directly to the cappuccino stain.
• Tamp stained area with a clean brush.
• Let the enzyme stain remover penetrate the cappuccino stain for 30-45 minutes.
• Rinse area with fresh water.

Oxidized Cappuccino Stain

Non Chlorinated Bleach – Sodium Percarbonate and Sodium Carbonate:

OxiClean

• Create a soaking solution in a bucket with 1 ounces of oxiclean per 1 gallon of water.
• Soak the entire item in the oxiclean solution.
• Let item soak for 2-3 hours.
• Rinse with fresh water.

Finish by cleaning the entire item as recommended by the care label.

Use product to test for colorfastness before attempting any stain removal techniques.

Canola oil stains at times are difficult to remove at home unless you know the secret. Let me introduce you to some green oil stain removers that we use in our green dry cleaner and are readily available at the local grocery stores.

Dawn Dishwashing Liquid:

• · Apply the Dawn Dishwashing Liquid directly to the canola oil stain.
• · Tamp the stained area with a toothbrush to help the Dawn penetrate the oil stain.
• · Let the Dawn penetrate the oil stain for a few minutes.
• · Rinse with fresh water.

If the stain starts to dissipate repeat the same steps or skip to Finishing Up.

If the first steps did not achieve adequate results then continue with a citrus base oil remover.

Dawn Dishwashing Liquid and CitraSolv:

• · Create a spotting solution with 1 part Dawn Dishwashing Liquid and 1 part CirtaSolv.
• · Apply the spotting solution directly to the canola oil stain.
• · Tamp the stain lightly with a soft brush (toothbrush) to help the solution penetrate into the oil stain.
• · Let the solution penetrate for a few minutes.
• · Rinse with fresh water.

Repeat these steps again if necessary.

FINISHING UP!

When done removing the stain always finish by cleaning the entire item per manufacture care instructions. Even benign spotting agents such as these will oxidize and yellow over time.

The majority of a cake stain is oil from the cake and sugar from the frosting. The solids from the cake will easily wipe off. Applying a good oil remover and water will easily release the stain.

Dawn Dishwashing Liquid is a great oil remove because it is designed to remove oils from your dishes. I like this because it works well and everyone has some readily available in the kitchen.

• Create a pre spotter using 1 part Dawn dishwashing liquid and 10 parts water.
• Apply the solution directly to the cake stain.
• Tamp with a brush to help solution penetrate stain.
• Let solution rest on stain for 5-10 minute to penetrate.
• Rinse area with fresh water.

Remember to always evaluated color and material. Test for color bleeding in a hidden area of the garment before proceeding with stain removal. Using a white towel apply a small amount of the solution onto the towel and dab a hidden area of the garment. If color transfers to the towel re-evaluate the use of the product and technique. Rubbing and scrubbing can cause excess color lost.

Finish by cleaning the entire item as recommended by the care label.
