How to Remove Blueberry Stains from a Bathrobe.
Whether the blueberries are from the farmers market, the organic grocery store, or the cheapest blueberries you can find on sale, it doesn’t matter, they all stain the same.
Blueberry is a fruit making it acidic and a tannin stain. Many of the spotting products such as Spray n Wash and Shout are high alkaline products. These products will change the structure to of the stain and make the stain much more difficult to remove. Stay away from these products for a tannin stain.
Choice of Products: Laundry Detergent, Distilled White Vinegar, Hydrogen Peroxide, and Borax.
Fresh Blueberry Stain:
- Blot with a wet towel followed by a dry towel.
- Repeat several times to remove the entire blueberry stain.
- If necessary create a spotting solution with 1 part laundry detergent, 1 part distilled white vinegar and 10 parts water.
- Apply solution directly on to the blueberry stain.
- Tamp (tap) with a brush.
- Blot with a wet towel followed by a dry towel.
Dried Blueberry Stain:
- Create a spotting solution with 1 part laundry detergent, 5 part distilled white vinegar and 5 parts water.
- Apply directly to the dried blueberry stain.
- Tamp with a brush.
- Let the solution penetrate for 10-15 minutes.
- Blot with a wet towel followed by a dry towel.
Stubborn Dried Blueberry Stain:
- Apply Hydrogen Peroxide directly to the stubborn dried Blueberry stain.
- Tamp with a brush.
- Let the solution penetrate for 5 minutes.
- Blot with a wet towel followed by a dry towel.
- Repeat if necessary.
*Hydrogen Peroxide is a natural bleaching agent that will remove color. Test in a hidden area before use.
Aged and Oxidized Blueberry Stains:
- Create a soaking solution with Borax and water per instructions.
- Soak the garment in the borax and water solution for several hours or over night.
- Rinse with clean water.
Test for colorfastness before using any of the spotting solutions. Apply a small amount of the solution on a white towel, blot that part of the towel on a hidden part o the garment. Check for color transfer on to the towel.
When done with the stain removal process, always clean the entire garment as recommended by the care label. Never leave garments unclean after using spotting or cleaning products. Over time the spotting agent can discolor, or yellow, and weaken the material.
