How to Wash a Comforter at Home.

 

Washing a  comforter at home is fairly straight forward. It takes approximately an hour and a half of your time,  your favorite green laundry soap, and a front load washer and a dryer. Synthetic comforters are easy to wash and even quicker to dry, however, most synthetic comforters have a print pattern that needs to be tested for colorfastness before you proceed with the washing.

Checking for colorfastness on a synthetic comforter or any garment is easy and straight forward. Simply  apply a small amount of water along with the green laundry detergent of choice to the towel. Dab that wet section of towel to an hidden area of the comforter. Check the towel for color transfer, If you do not have any color transfer you are safe to wash the comforter without fear of color loss. If color does transfer over to the towel, then you must evaluate the amount of color loss during the wash cycle and if that is acceptable to you. Along with color loss during washing you will also have color transfer from one part of the comforter to the other. Example: colors will bleed onto the white area of the pattern, dark colors will bleed onto the light areas of the comforter. If this is acceptable then continue otherwise DO NOT WASH YOUR COMFORTER. If there is slight color bleed, adding an ounce of distilled white vinegar to a gallon of water will help reduce the color loss.

Most front load home washers and dryers are large enough to wash and dry even a king size comforter. DO NOT attempt to wash your comforter in a top load washer. This type of washer is not large enough to wash your comforter. The comforter will fit into the washer, however, there is not enough room for the comforter to move and agitate, so the end result will be a wet soggy mess. For a few dollars, commercial Laundromats have front load washer that will wash your comforter nicely. Or avoid wasting a few hours hanging out at the Laundromat by bringing the comforter to us and we will take care of it for you.

Step by step instructions:

? Place the comforter in the washer.

?Run the washer on the gentle cycle along with a small amount of green laundry soap of your choice. The hotter the water the better it will clean, however, the hotter the water the more of a chance that color loss and shrinkage will occur.

? Once the wash cycle is done place the comforter into the dryer.

? Dry the comforter on low heat for 30-45 minutes. Pull the comforter out and flip it around, place the comforter back into the dry and continue drying the comforter.

Check the comforter again in 30-45 minutes from the time of the first flip. Flip the comforter again if you still feel any dampness. Continue to dry until completely dried.

Be sure the comforter is completely dry before storing away. A damp comforter will mold over time and cause problems in the future.
